Class 9 decided to work on a small email project.
We wanted to make contact with a class of American students of the same age.
The students should work on the text for the mails during their English lessons
with the teacher. Later they would write the mails during their text typing
lessons. They would try to ask the American students simple questions about the United States
and their normal daily life.
So we found a class in Kansas.

2. Introduction mail from the American students
3. Our first mail to Kansas
- Our Class 9 students translated the mails received and set up an
introduction mail for the American students.
- During the text typing lesson the students wrote the mails and sent them.
4. Answers to our questions
- We got answers, you can read themhere.
- Our students wrote back and asked about Hurricanes.
- There you can read the answers. Now we finally
know the difference between Hurricanes and Tornadoes.
5. Hurray we have an own chat room!
- In the meantime Mrs. Frank set up a private chatroom at www.epals.com
so that we could also chat. Although Class 7 and 8 were allowed to test
this chatroom, it was mainly set up for the first chat with the American
students. We had to find a good time for our date, as the time difference
is about 7 hours between Unterhaching in Germany and Wilson in Kansas.
6. Our Chat!
- Finally we made a date for 22th December 2000. Our students hadn't school
time as it was 16:15 p.m. our time. So they came into the computer room
during their free time.
- All were very excited, as it was so new and we got a first impression of
chatting with America. Our students who are not used to speaking English,
created groups to help each other with translating. Also the students of Kansas
got a bit excited, although they had to do the easier part as English is
their home language. So the students exchanged messages and greetings for
Christmas and had some short conversations. All had a lot of fun and the American
students got more lively in our imagination.
- Here you can find the names and photos of the "American
Chatter" and the following mail
Since some weeks we lost a bit track of our email project, as our students
have to learn a lot for their final exams. The American students had some
problems with their computer equipment. The private email contact between Mrs.
Ward and Mrs. Frank is still going on. We got messages that the American
students had learned about the program Powerpoint and had built their own slideshows.
Some also built websites. You can look at it by: http://www.wtciweb.com/~wardfarms/.
Downloading the Powerpoint slideshows takes some time but is worth it.
